For our 600 day update, we announced that we’d just got married. Now for our 700 day update, we can announce something else exciting.
We are officially living in Berlin!
We became resident here in Germany a short while ago, but we’ve been hopping between staying with friends, temporary sublets and Airbnb rentals. We’re now just about able to move into our new home finally!
If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you may have noticed that we’ve been talking about moving to Berlin for some time now, and indeed have already written quite a lot about the city, so you might have assumed we’d moved here months ago.
Indeed, we have spent a lot of time in Berlin this year, certainly more than anywhere else, but none of those stays were longer than five weeks in one place. In fact, we’ve now stayed in apartments all over the city, from Neukölln and Kreuzberg, to Schöneberg, Wedding, Prenzlauerberg and Friedrichshain.
Finally, though, we’ve circled back to what is undoubtedly our favourite district of Berlin, Neukölln, and the place we hope to call home for quite a while.
Of course, this does not mean the end of our travels. Far from it! We have decided that we wanted to have a base, rather than be fully nomadic and Berlin works well for us for a number of reasons (it is in the EU so we can live here visa free; we both already speak German; we have friends living here; it’s vegan heaven and it’s much more affordable than my native London).
Unlike getting married which took very little preparation, our move to Berlin has been a long, slow, bureaucratic, costly, frustrating and sometimes stressful process which still isn’t fully complete. This hasn’t allowed for much travel in these last 100 days, but instead we’ve mostly been focusing on our work (including, for me, teaching English).
However, keep your eyes peeled as we do have a post coming soon revealing our big upcoming travel plans for early 2015.
Until then, we’ll be here, hunting for furniture, trying to choose the most minimal selection of kitchen utensils and listening to this song on repeat.
