Digital Nomad Café Guide to San Cristobal de las Casas

The beautiful colonial town of San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas, though small, has several nice cafés to work from as a digital nomad. Be warned though, due to its altitude of 2,200 meters above sea level and its location surrounded by mountains, the town is quite cold at night and most places have no heating and also leave their front doors open all the time, so working in any of these cafés in the morning, it’s likely to be a bit chilly! During the day though, it warms up considerably.

Expect to pay around M$45 for a coffee in most of these places. Here’s a guide to our favourite digital nomad cafés in San Cristobal de las Casas.

Amor Negro

Probably our favourite café to work from in San Cristobal de las Casas, this place has a lot going for it. Set inside the small but super hipster complex of boutique shops, art studios cafés and restaurants, Esquina San Agustin, it’s fully indoors meaning it’s probably the warmest place to work in the mornings. The staff are friendly and they do a pretty mean hot chocolate made from local cocoa. Their wifi is some of the fastest we found in town and as a bonus they have free drinking water.

Downsides are that there are no power sockets and it can get busy with large groups in afternoons and evenings so you might feel like you’re taking up too much space. In the mornings, though it’s fine, and we could easily spend an entire morning there working, making calls and taking breaks to look around the shops in the complex.

Carajillo Café

This conveniently located cafe right on the main pedestrian street is a delight to work in. With fast wifi and a few power sockets, it’s bright, inviting and has large tables. Staff are happy to leave you alone, and you won’t be the only one working there, as it’s clearly it’s a popular place for digital nomads and locals alike to work from.

The only downside is that (like most buildings in San Cristobal) it’s not well insulated and doors are left open so it can be quite cold inside in the mornings. By midday and afternoon it will have warmed up, though! It has a nice minimal design, with some interesting art and coffee paraphernalia on display and also sells some handmade scarves.

Natura Orgánico

This cosy little café has indoor and outdoor seating right on the main pedestrian street, so is perfect for perching yourself at and people watching. Inside, there are some power sockets, though tables are a little small and perhaps the seating isn’t the most comfortable. The wifi works fine, though.

Staff didn’t seem bothered by us working there, and even though we were the only ones, mostly left us alone, making it easy to concentrate on work. It’s nicely designed and made for a decent workplace for a couple of hours.

Mío Lonchería

With a small but nicely laid out downstairs area and a quiet upstairs area with sofa, this place makes for a decent work spot. There are some power sockets here and there and the wifi was fine, but not super speedy.

Staff seemed a little overbearing and perhaps unfamiliar with the concept of people working in their café, but left us alone nonetheless. Tables are spacious enough for two people working opposite at one, though the seating is not so comfortable so I wouldn’t want to stay for more than say two hours.

Teddy’s Coffee Factory

Both a good option for vegan food and as a digital nomad café, this place has several seating areas, both indoors and out as well as multiple power sockets. The tables were spacious, the wifi solid and the staff friendly but occupied enough with other things to leave us alone to work.

It felt like the kind of place we could easily have spent all morning, eating lunch there then continued working into the afternoon, though we only got to spend a few hours there. They even have some vegan cookies!
