5 Vegan Eats in Bangkok

We only spent three nights in Bangkok which wasn’t quite long enough to create a full vegan city guide like we would’ve liked to, especially since one was out of town at the Bangkok Tree House. Instead, we hit a couple of highlights in the vegan scene there and a few lesser known places for some excellent vegan eats.

Rocket

This painfully hipster café in Silom, while it doesn’t overtly advertise it anywhere, does actually serve a couple of vegan options including salads, porridge, soup and smoothies and they have soy milk for hot drinks. While vegetarian options are marked on the menu, vegan ones are not so if it’s unclear, just ask staff to point out what is vegan for you. Though small, Zab assured me that the coffee is delicious.

We went for breakfast after arriving in town on the overnight train from Chiang Mai and enjoyed the few vegan breakfast options, especially the almond bircher muesli with banana puree. When it’s not too busy it can also serve as a decent place to work. Bear in mind that prices on the menu don’t include the 10% service charge and 7% VAT, which while common, can come as a shock as the prices are already quite high.

Bonita Café and Social Club

A quirky little slice of Americana in downtown Bangkok, this fully vegan café serves a great range of western comfort food in cosy surroundings. The decor would not be out of place in your grandmother’s living room and the staff are the loveliest people.

We enjoyed the club sandwich with cashew cream cheese, though it might not be for you if you only like your sandwiches to be very dry. The wholewheat pancakes with perfectly ripe mango and maple syrup were gorgeous.

The little touches like the complimentary popcorn appetiser, the heart shaped fruit in our juices and the humorous notes on the menu about the resident cat made us smile. The location, while in a relatively busy part of town and easy to find, is an oasis of calm and is the perfect place to reenergise before heading out into Bangkok again.

Veganerie

If you feel like indulging in some of the most decadent vegan desserts you can imagine, this is the place in Bangkok to do it. The menu is extensive and if you’re anything like me, you may find it hard to choose! However, I can highly recommend the black sesame ice cream and the dark chocolate brownie. Topped off with whipped soy cream, the combination is heavenly if perhaps a bit too rich.

The setting is not the most lovely, as it’s on the top floor of a small mall, so there is no natural light inside, but it is comfortable enough and the staff are lovely. This is an excellent place to come for a decadent evening dessert and to get a few cookies to take away for later!

May Veggie Home

With a relatively small menu, this basic but spacious restaurant serves up tasty and satisfying vegan fare. The burgers are decent, the Thai dishes are quite adequate and there are a few other interesting dishes like stuffed avocado. It also has the advantage of being in a very convenient location right by Asok BTS station and across the street from the Maduzi hotel where we also stayed.

We also enjoyed the generous smoothies and the coconut ice cream. Come early in the day if you want to have a chance of trying any of the cakes.

While not our absolutely favourite place in Bangkok, May Veggie Home is great for something easy and filling that’s not too expensive.

Broccoli Revolution

This ultra hipster vegan café and restaurant was definitely a highlight of our vegan eats in Bangkok. The focus is on healthy food, and they serve lots of juices, even some with broccoli! The menu is rather extensive with a lot of Mediterranean style dishes. Everything was fresh and tasty.

I particularly enjoyed the bean and squash burritos with guacamole and tofu satay.

Desserts are from Veganerie and the setting is very cool with a range of seating options. You place your order with the friendly staff and pay before eating.
