Pizza is of course some very easy to make vegan if you’re cooking for yourself at home: simply leave off the cheese.
However, if some nicely melted cheese over your topping of choice is just what you look for in a pizza, then eating one without can be somewhat disappointing.
Sfizy in Berlin has the answer to this problem. With an extensive range of vegan pizzas all with tasty and convincing vegan cheeses that actually melt, they don’t disappoint.
Last month we made a date to meet up with Victoria and Steve just after they returned to Berlin from the UK at Sfizy, and as soon as we arrived, I felt relaxed and enchanted by the cute place.
Sfizy was Europe’s first fully vegan pizzeria, set up by two Italians. With walls full of quirky art, mismatched tables and chairs and even a bookshelf of vegan cook books to browse while you waited for your food, there was much more of a sense of being in a friend’s comfortable living room than in a restaurant.
So, we made ourselves at home and ordered a milky chai for Zab and a watercress avocado dream green smoothie for me. While not green (it also contained wild fruits, which turned it brown) it was tasty and certainly added a much needed healthy boost to the meal that was about to ensue.
There is no table service at Sfizy, so once you arrive don’t expect anyone to take your order. Instead, order at the counter and your food will be brought to you when ready.
We began with a starter of bruschetta with tomato, oregano and cheese, which was just the right thing to keep us going while we pored over the long list of pizza options.
Not only do Sfizy offer wonderful vegan cheese, but there is also a rather large range of vegan meats, including fish, which we unanimously decided sounded disgusting. Instead, we stuck to mostly vegetables.
Between the four of us we ordered a radical chic pizza, which consisted of four different parts (artichokes and faux ham, olives and spinach, rocket and parmesan and mushroom) and a Mex pizza with kidney beans, guacamole, hot sauce and strangely enough, tortilla chips. This worked out to half a pizza each, which was just the right amount.
Keeping with the Italian style, they also offered vegan tiramisu, which along with a piece of chocolate cream cake, we just had to try. They were both creamy, delicious and satisfying.
Overall, we all really enjoyed our meal at Sfizy, and the vegan pizza was a delightful find. Had I not known these pizzas were vegan, I would easily have believed they were made with dairy cheese, the imitations were that good.
